This simplifies a lot the intricate Oracle database configuration and makes the preconfigured VM a very suitable choice for beginners and students. The Linux kernel is very well-developed and supports the standard shell platforms (zsh, csh, bash, ksh, etc). I use Oracle Linux for deploying the servers at the business logic layer (Apache Tomcat) and at the data persistence layer (Oracle Database 12c).
