About Looker

Looker, now part of Google Cloud, is a cloud-based business intelligence (BI) platform designed to explore and analyze data. The solution helps businesses to capture and analyze data from multiple sources and make data-driven decisions. Looker provides business teams the ability to analyze supply chains, market digitally, quantify customer value, interpret customer behavior, and evaluate distribution processes. Users can also "view source" to understand how the data they are viewing is being manipulated. The dashboards allow presenting data and insights using customizable charts, graphs, and reports. All dashboards and queries can be drilled into, so users can discover information in multiple layers. With Looker's data modeling language, users can define data metrics and explore relationships between various data sets. The storytelling feature allows users to present data analysis to stakeholders through data-rich visualizations. Looker is used in many industry sectors across the US and Canada including e-commerce, construction, education, finance, healthcare, media, and technology.

Google Looker, ideal both for experienced and new users

Overall, we are very happy with Looker and we will keep using it. However, improvements on speed & connectors are crucial in order to make the product even more useful.

Pros

Social Media reporting is the primary reason for using Looker (ex-Data Studio). The numerous connections with the social media platforms and the ability to create reports in a fast, efficient & scalable way are the most important benefits of the platform.

Cons

Although our experienced team members are able to create Looker reports from scratch, the newest members need numerous training sessions to understand how the platform works and how they can use it to create custom reports. Also, the fact that data connectors often fail, creates an additional burden for everyone involved, from team members to end clients.

Lack of dashboard customization options makes the look stiff and takes away from a user experience that could have been.

Looker - next gen reporting

Looker is the perfect app for creating reports and a business dashboard. It is shareable and collaborating with different departments via sheets allows me to gather all the data I need fast and on time. It gives a good and complex overview over different parts of the business and department I work.
The reports are easy to share or export to other as PDF or online report.

Pros

The most important feature for me is that I can have always up to date reports, connecting different data sources like different apps and sheets and updating the reports in real time saves me a lot of time and hard work. Creating a dashboard with different data is easy and straightforward and worth every second spend to learn how to create your it.

Cons

For a fist timer it was a little hard to get all data connected and create the charts and graphs as I imagined.

Alternatives Considered

Microsoft Excel

Reasons for Switching to Looker

In Excel i needed to import different data in one workbook, and then create the charts and graphs I needed. It was complicated to export as PDF and send it to other. Took a lot of time.

A Powerful and Customizable Data Visualization Tool

In conclusion, we liked the usefulness of Looker Studio in the team. The design and presentation of compelling and attractive dashboards stuffed with the right information has enhanced the way we make decisions based on data.

Pros

Looker Studio is very customizable providing possibilities of creating specific dashboards for a given clientele.

The application does a great job at transforming intricate datasets into visuals that can be understood within a short span of time making it simple to detect patterns and insights.

Cons

Learning curve: Despite the app having a nice graphic user interface layout, the users are likely to face challenges in understanding how to use it especially new comers in visualising data.

Such as it is in Looker Studio where there are numerous datasets most of which are supported, some custom or specialized datasets may have restrictions.

Alternatives Considered

Tableau and Microsoft Power BI

Reasons for Choosing Looker

The move was due to improved customizations in Looker Studio in addition to better data integration.
