Great Tool For The Entire Project Life Cycle

We have been using SpiraTeam within our organization for quite a few years. SpiraTeam is very easy to use, and is a great way to help track, maintain and troubleshoot an entire project, from the planning stages, to implementation, to enhancement requests and software bug and defect resolution. I would recommend SpiraTeam to any organization looking for a straightforward, easy to use tool.

Pros:

Easy to use
Versatile
Tracks multiple project points

Cons

Cannot easily move artifacts from one project to another.

#1 Product for Testing, Requirements Traceability and Defect Tracking

Our team brought SpiraTeam on-prem 7 years ago from a SaaS product. We are able to save files that may contain server or employee sensitive information. Product is used globally from business users to full development teams. No complaints with the exception of offering a broader offering of reports. Fantastic customer service - the [sensitive content hidden] himself has joined discussions to ensure we are pleased with the product and is open to any recommendations.

Pros

It's very easy to use while also providing 100% Requirement Traceability and can easily be utilized as a product backlog. Teams benefit from being able to track issues not associated with specific tests. Artifacts can be linked to each other with one-click. Resource assignments easily displayed. Customizable drop-down fields and customizable workflows.

Cons

The need to have XML experience to customize the default reports. Vendor provided upload file works very well but could use some updating.

Alternatives Considered

Jira

Reasons for Switching to SpiraTeam

The price of Jira was much higher, the functionality was confusing and required a much more rigid workflow.

A complete vision of the projects

I was used SpiraTeam in some projects. Our work with the application was right, but our experience with it, is like a fixed application with a strongest modulation of the project process. The UI, is not very friendly with a complex form to work on it.
Is true, that you can add any document, requirement, task or other in each moment, but you cannot change the flow of the project. In action it is maddening because you has not clarity of the steps to do with the different parts of the project.
But, if you have a big project with many people that need to interact (for example, you need to follow the status of the tasks and the test cases by developer) it is your project application.

Pros

The application can modify to adapt the workflow to your needs (based on a complex workflow). The document management is very good. You can change a part of UI (colors, logos, etc.). You can do a personal dashboard with your heat points. This could help you to focus your most important points.

Cons

In my personal opinion, the application needs a guidance or a screen that can show the flow process to make more easy the entry of the project elements.

Response from Inflectra

Thanks for the feedback. We are adding a new user onboarding wizard into SpiraTeam to guide a new user through the project management process that is enabled in SpiraTeam.

We're not sure which version Daniel used, but v5.0 has a completely overhauled user interface which our users are loving.

Spira test manager review

Great help for test management, bug management, reporting.

Pros

ISTQB theory is implemented in Spira. Easy to use in different categories. A lot of opportunities for project management.

Cons

There are no big problems but I have to mention better connection with Jira, full range of services to be implemented in both directions.

A system with virtues and aspects to improve

The most necessary changes that Inflectra SpiraTeam can develop in new improvements are the following: the grids can be very restrictive and do not offer the possibilities of quickly ordering the launches, in the requirements module it is where they must make more changes to increase the speed and for last I would like to see in a new version a better way to create custom reports.

Pros

Inflectra SpiraTeam is a product that works satisfactorily with multiple browsers such as Chome, Opera and Firefox without presenting compatibility problems, it is very easy to manage and maintain and another positive aspect is the robust integration with AxoSoft OnTime. My recommendation is to work day by day with Inflectra SpiraTeam and request technical assistance if necessary. Also, I recommend asking Inflectra to add more features in a new release. SpiraTeam has a lot to improve, but it is on the right track.

Cons

There are many improvements that the Inflectra SpiraTeam team can implement in a new update, for example, the grids, custom reports and the requirements module. SpiraTeam should implement and add more custom reporting options, improve testing functionality, and increase the speed of the requirement module.

SpiraTeam Review

Overall, the product is a great value. There are definitely things that can be improved though.
* Make reporting easier to use and more flexible. One of our number 1 complaints from Managers that use the system including myself is that we can't easily get data out of the system.
* Make it easier to create custom reports.
* The testing functionality is still cumbersome. We have seen our testing times increase fairly significantly since we started using the product. While some of that was expected, the tool is slow and not very efficient in some cases. For example instead of allowing multiple modules to be added at one time, the testers have to search for each one separately.
* The requirements module is slow.
* Performance of the product overall could be improved.
* Grids are restrictive. I have gotten lots of feedback with people wanting the ability to do things like double sort the grids or multiselecting certain fields like release.
* The customer service is fantastic but the reason I didn't give it an outstanding score is because I wish we had more say with enhancements. I wish we could pay you for an enhancement that was really important to us or for you to create a report for us.

Response from Inflectra

We appreciate the feedback. Reporting is one of those areas where we have added significant new capabilities but users always want to slice and dice things in different ways. The custom reporting added in v4.1 has helped by allowing users to create their own reports and we shall be adding more custom graphs in future version.
For enhancements we have 5000+ customers so sadly we do have to make decisions about priority, which is one challenge with a tool that is designed to be used by large numbers of customers that have their own processes...

SpiraTeam gives visibility to the work getting done!

My company purchase this and said "here, figure out how to use this for your project". It took be a couple of hours to put all the pieces together. It is rather intuitive and user friendly. I was able to guide the team into how we intend to use the tool to develop our software product. It was easy to get the team engaged in using SpiraTeam.

Pros

I like that we can see the work move across the Planning (Kanban) Board so it gives great visibility to the entire team of the work that is being done. It is great for agile approach to software development. It provides great integration from Requirement to Development to Testing to Completed.

Cons

The toughest part of using this new tool was to determine at what level to put the requirements into the system. As we were transitioning to agile at the same time we determined to put features into the tool as requirements and write user stories for each feature. It worked well. My team experienced some clunkiness, but I believe it was the way we had the tool configured as opposed to the tool itself. We changed the permissions on a couple of roles (BA, Developer) and it worked much better. We also changed some of the default workflows to make it work better.

Great affordable Project Lifecycle Management tool!

My team and I have been using SpiraTeam for over a year now. We continue to be impressed by how customizable the product is. The ability to create custom workflows for Requirements and Incidents really allows us to make this product conform to our companies methodology. We aren't forced to follow a rigid methodology (Pure waterfall or Scrum). We can configure the application to follow our specific needs.

Pros

-Hosted solution, no infrastructure to worry about, Inflectra handles the backups, upgrades, servers, etc
-Customizable workflows
-Easy to learn UI
-Plug-in for integration with our Automated Testing tool
-Plug-in for Visual Studio

Cons

-At times it can be a little slow when loading new pages, not huge lag but enough to be annoying
-The out of the box reports aren't the best and creating custom reports is challenging

Manage the full project lifecycle, testing is just a part

We have been using SpiraTeam for well over 4 years now and have over 600 registered users with over 100 using the system at any one time. SpiraTeam allows us to manage multiple development projects detailing requirements, writing and executing test cases and mapping the two together. SpiraTeam provides a great defect tracking tool and is used internally and by clients alike.

Pros

Customisable workflows, SpiraTeam uses colour in the interface well to highlight high priority items. SpiraTeam supports multiple plugins and we have integrated with Jenkins. Good support with same day response normal.

Cons

Occasionally buggy after new releases. Agile task management tools need refining.

Excellent package, it helped improve our internal processes

We migrated from OnTime to SpiraTeam and couldn't be happier. For us, the power of SpiraTeam is the way it ties everything together. It also clear visibility of things like: This release includes these features and addresses these defects, and these test cases were executed. it is clear what is being included in each release, and it improves communication between our project managers and the developers. We have three testers, and they use the testing features of SpiraTeam both in concert with an automated tool (TestComplete) and for manual testing. We recently hired a junior tester to do manual testing, guided by the test scripts created in SpiraTeam by our lead tester.
Our developers have been asking for a Kanban board, which is not currently available. It is coming, accounting to Inflectra's support. Speaking of support, we've been happy with the results the few times we have needed to call. These days it is relatively unusual to call a company and have your call answered by a real live person, a person who has a detailed understanding of the product, and who has a full command of the English language.
We are hosting the application ourselves. Setup was easy, and the performance is excellent. We looked at a lot of products in this space, from open source to very expensive. SpiraTeam was the best choice for us, and we've never regretted the purchase.

Facilitates the daily work

SpiraTeam is used to manage the test cases of five different development languages and more than fifteen different base products. The overview of all products is elementary and is very well solved in SpiraTeam.
The selection of connectable test software is very good.

Pros

SpiraTeam is clear and intuitive to use.
The cockpits are a good starting point for daily work.

Cons

The structure of the requirements is not transferred from DevOps and after grouping the original types are lost.

Response from Inflectra

We are looking to add a way to keep the requirement types from ADO once the requirements are nested and grouped in the SpiraTeam hierarchy.

Great Lifecycle Management Tool

SpiraTeam is a flexible lifecycle management tool. In addition to using it for software development, we've found the incident tracker to be highly customizable for hardware defect resolution tracking. This is an extremely cost-effective tool for creating standardized workflows and improving the documentation trail of your products.

Pros

Incident tracker flexibility is phenomenal.

Cons

Inability to search the contents of uploaded documents that contain text from the search bar to get back to your artifacts.

SpiraTeam Review

Basis our current usage, we have found Spira to be a good SDLC tool till the testing stage. This has helped us tracking/recording and monitoring our test cases and test results.

The workflow in which we are able to track the requirement from the initial requirement gathering stage to the release stage, including testing very effectively. It has also helped in keeping a tab on the release calender and hence effective Project Management.

There is scope of improvement in the overall upload functionality, specially post appending our data. Creation of new workflow, still remains a challenge, which hopefully spira team is working towards addressing.
It would be helpful, if we complete SDLC cycle, including post release management workflows as well.

Review for government contractor agile team

Would highly recommend. We reviewed several tracking tools for agile development, and this was definitely one of the top contenders. Nice work!

Pros

Excellent tool. Really liked the ability to trace a requirement all the way through the process, linking it to test cases.

Cons

The one negative for us was the lack of a sortable backlog for scrum. I was not able to find a way to rank items in a list to create the order for the backlog. Are there any plans for this in an upcoming release?

Response from Inflectra

You can prioritize the items in the backlog by assigning them a priority value (1-4) however in addition in a future release we shall be adding the ability to drag and drop prioritize them.

Excellent product

Overall SpiraTeam is an excellent product, very easy to use and testers love the set up. I have been setting it up onsite for a major client and showing their test team how to use the product. As well as the set up, I am also hooking it up to Rapise to get automated testing in place for a continuous deployment solution.

There have been one or two issues, however, the Inflectra support team are very, very quick to help and resolve any problems, and they also readily implement change suggestions if you come up with something that would be useful.

Note: Make sure you take a full back up before updating to newer versions if running on a local server.

Pros

The product does an outstanding job on collecting the information needed to manage projects both large and small. The application has a good road map for future enhancements and helps me manage my projects without the normal amount of effort.

Cons

The screens could use some user inferface enhancements to make it easier to navigate. The filters, although useful, can confuse you as to what you are seeing. Many time I think I'm missing data to only find that the system ha me in a filter.

We have used this tool for organisation of 50 users and it has worked perfectly. It has got all the features which a Test and Defect management tools should have.

Cons
