A powerful CRM system for small businesses
We were able to consolidate membership, event, fundraising, and accounting data with the assistance of Neon's centralized database. The fact that we can generate almost any report has greatly increased the value of this information in helping us achieve our aims and ambitions.
Pros
I enjoy making reports and filling out forms. Adapting an existing form to my requirements and developing a report to go along with it. It's incredible how many tools are available. Despite working with a CRM consultant, I can use various resources to find things out.
Cons
While the steps may not always be obvious, any questions you have can be answered by visiting the Help Center or chatting with a representative. Filtering reports requires some practice, but the power to make personalized reports more than makes up for it.

Best Customer Service and Ease of Admin Stress
Amazing and have recomended them to most non profits researching for a new crm.
Pros
The customer service is what made the decision easiest for us. Responsive and listens to every concern.Administrative heachaces are lessened with automation. The CRM integrates with many programs to reduce user entry errors on the backend.
Cons
events management still needs work (9/6/23). While It is great to use and get a complete picture of the constituent, the actual designing and then the signup pages fro events is cumbersome without help.

Save yourself a Headache
Absolutely horrible! We ask for basic functionality like integration with Paypal, Square, not have our event drop off the calendar day of event, or a dynamic token for events and the answer is always the same, we do not have that functionality please put it in our suggestions portal.
Visit the suggestions page and there are requests going back years that have been un touched. What ever you do, do not use this CRM as it will be quite painful if you make the migration.
Pros
Can't think of anything positive about this CRM.
Cons
Integration with POS like Square or Paypal. If you want to use these other POS systems for re-occuring memberships/doners its not possible. they force you to use Neon Pay which does not even have NFC tech capabilities or work on a IOS or Android device.

Pros & Cons
I like Neon but in general it's a bit too complicated and confusing. We encounter more problems than we'd like. We also learned recently that one of the main reasons we started using Neon is going to be disabled soon - having a web theme that mimics our WordPress theme. We wanted visual continuity from our website to our Neon forms and pages, and that's not going to be possible any longer, so it really throws a wrench in why we chose to use Neon in the first place...
Pros
I appreciate all that can be done in Neon. There are so many options, things I didn't even know we could keep track of. I also appreciate that there are a lot of customization options.
Cons
There are almost *too many* options and possibilities. It is also not always intuitive and a lot of things take multiple steps across multiple sections to implement. I have to submit tickets often because things aren't working as I think they should or I'm confused by something...
Response from Neon One
Hi Haley, thanks for being a Neon One customer! Your review is very helpful. We understand that our robust features can be a bit overwhelming, so we created Neon Academy to help customers learn the platform. Check it out! Also, we offer Neon Websites, a website builder that forms integrate seamlessly with. It's understandable if you'd like to stick with Wordpress, but it may be an option for your organization. Happy New Year, and thanks again for being a customer!

Fundraising, Event, and Contact management for Non-profit
Pros
The built-in fundraising, event registration, and contact management features have allowed us to keep everything inside of NEON. Previously we were cobbling together data from separate systems with quite a lot of Excel exporting and importing in between.
Cons
The built-in email template creation tool is powerful, but the learning curve is a little greater compared with other platforms which specialize in email marketing. After a little effort, we were able to recreate what we needed in NEON.We have not found a straightforward, built-in feature to put multiple contacts into a dedicated group for one-off purposes. It can be done, but one higher level of organization of contacts would make contact management almost perfect.
Response from Neon One
Hey Stuart, thank you for leaving us this thoughtful review! I think your idea around adding the ability to add contacts to a group for one-off purposes is stellar. Have you submitted that idea to our Suggestions Portal? Our team will review it and let you know if this is something we can move forward with implementing! Thanks again :)

Simple and Straightforward
Overall, Neon CRM is a great product for the cost. As a smaller nonprofit, most of our budget goes directly back into youth programs.
Pros
Neon CRM is a simple, straightforward tool. It's easy to use and there are a lot of resources and tools to help onboard new users. It's cost-effective for our nonprofit and enables us to track donors, volunteers, and donations in one place.
Cons
A feature that could be improved at our subscription level is the ability to automate workflows. As it is, we have to manually pull reports to see if donors need to be contacted, moved along the pipeline, etc. It would be a huge improvement if Neon CRM offered a budget friendly alternative that enabled us to set contact on a pipeline and receive reminders when it's time to move them along.
Alternatives Considered

At this time, Neon CRM is the most effective for our budget. We've also been pretty satisfied with it over the years, so even when prices increased we still felt like it was meeting our immediate needs.Response from Neon One

Neon CRM review
Overall, Neon CRM has greatly improved our ability to track and steward donors. Our fundraising endeavors have greatly benefited as have our events. And automating many of the processes like acknowledgments has freed up more time to work on further improvements. It's been a huge improvement over the excel spreadsheets we were using previously.
Pros
The constituent portal is what really stood out for me and made me choose Neon CRM over other options.
Cons
There are certainly some features that could be improved or added. I've found donation batching to be cumbersome. There is no sustaining membership option, where a recurring donation can be counted toward a membership. And the duplicate merging process is clunky.

Everything in one convenient product
Pros
I like that there is so much information that you can log about contacts, that people can sign in, that there are websites now, that I can send out campaigns to specific groups and get helpful analytics, that we can add users rather than log into only one account, and that we can easily see who are active and inactive members.
Cons
There is a bit of a learning curve in terms of nomenclature and finding what you're looking for in the global settings. Filters for finding a specific set of members could be easier, but you can get used to how it works. When I went to someone for help, I ended up figuring it out before they were able to answer it for me, which took us both a long time, so I think it is not very intuitive if support staff also have trouble figuring it out.
Response from Neon One
Hey Alexis, thanks so much for your review! It sounds like your org has been able to do a ton with Neon CRM, and we love hearing about all of your success! Thanks again :)

Thank You For Keeping Us Organized!
Educational! I love tuning into your live webinars and monthly updates. Getting to know some of the Neon team virtually has been fun as well. I have learned a lot about what goes into keeping a nonprofit organized as well as keeping donors motivated/engaged, and I owe that to tinkering around with Neon and learning from you all.
Pros
The extent to which it is able to keep our entire nonprofit organized.
Cons
No option for live-help. As the resident not-technologically-trained IT support in our organization, I am very thorough when trying to find answers to my questions before I ask for help. Plus, sometimes my questions have very quick fixes, and it's not cost-effective for us to purchase time to receive help for these quick fixes. I think it would be helpful to receive a certain amount of live-help each month, even if it is over chat.

Great Potential - Still Learning - Want More Effeciency
I'm still fairly new to the system (only a few months on my new job) and am hoping to build out more workflows and automation to help us be even more efficient with our limited time as a small nonprofit with a handful of employees.
Pros
Having almost all of the critical data in one place and the ability to run reports, create forms for data collection, and track funding efficiently. I look forward to learning even more about how to use it to the full potential.
Cons
Cannot view a form completely without going into fill it out; unclear at a given time what our package includes as far as apps, integrations, and updates; and excessive data points on profiles/accounts from various forms (we need to do a lot of data cleaning). The cost to ongoing support and build-outs is a bit prohibitive as far as I can tell.
Response from Neon One
Hello Carolyn, Congrats on your new job role! That's exciting! We know it can be difficult joining a new team with a new platform. Be sure to check out Neon Academy where you'll also be able to register for office hours and gather other helpful resources.

Neon CRM has been a game-changer.
It has been a great experience and I will definitely tell other it is a great product.
Pros
Not having to do everything manually. The workflows and auto-emails have been critical for a small team. It is easy to use.
Cons
The speed of uploading or running reports. It can take awhile to load a donors donations.

Neon CRM Review
Mediocre but I need the data so put up with it.
Pros
I like that people can sign up and pay for events. I like having donations come right into the system.
Cons
Not user friendly, especially when it comes to designing reports. I don't like that duplicates are not being alerted to - there are many duplicates that don't automatically merge. I also don't like that thank you letter templates aren't able to be individualized or edited at all.

Great affordable CRM
Pros
The training is top notch and I am able to utilize all the features which makes our nonprofit stronger. Neon CRM is more affordable than other options and has a lot of the same features. I love that I am able to add event tickets!
Cons
It's a little hard to figure out how to add tasks, but once you get it, this CRM runs really well.
Reasons for Switching to Neon CRM
Price and friendly sales rep. We are also smaller, so we didn't need the full Salesforce package. Finally, I had used Arts People at another nonprofit and they moved to Neon, so I was familiar with it.Response from Neon One

Great for managing renewals, not useful for team overall
One of the main reasons we wanted to a CRM to track a schools participation doesn't really work. We are considering other platforms that might be able to offer this.
Pros
Since switching to Neon processing membership renewals has been a million times easier. I can see easily how may years someone has been a member, what they have paid, the tier they should be at and I can easily communicate all this when their membership expires. Folks can easily become members through our site as well. Membership retention has been successful and my job has been easier.
Cons
I had hoped that with the eventbrite integration that I could go to a school and see everyone who had participated in a program. We do not offer individual memberships, but that is the only way that neon is set up. I want to be able to see how a school is using their membership through program participation year to year, but it is still impossible to run a report or see this easily. For this reason and many others, nobody on my team is using the platform. I looked and nobody had logged in for years! I have deemed it a non-useful tool for this reason.

All Inclusive Donor Management, Membership Management and Event Registration Software
Wonderful from the DEMO, to installation, to use.Customer Support is awesome. I am a power user and my questions tend to be complex and customer support is also available to help me figure out solutions.
Pros
I like that the software is an integrated software with Donor Management, Membership Management and Event Registration Software. Prior to NEON, we managed this functionality in multiple products. NEON CRM allows us to fully integrate all functions of our nonprofit and create a report with all the parts of our nonprofit.CUSTOMER SUPPORT
Cons
-The store can be more robust. However, I am thrilled that it is even a part of the package. I think of the Store as an extra product that we get for free, so overall I am happy with the store.-Reporting can combine more data elements from different parts of the system. For instance, looking at meeting registration and attendance with donations.

Neon CRM a great platform
The support team has been a great awesome. They are quick to respond and work with us to help solve our challenges.
Pros
Neon has many levels of functionality which provides a one stop shopping for most of our CRM, events and donation needs!
Cons
There is a big learning curve for those who are not familiar with CRM platforms.

Selected it twice.
It’s been very good. I have used several CRMs for nonprofits for 35 years and this is as easy as most and comprehensive enough to help get work done. NeonCRM fits in a good spot of affordable with a lot of function.
Pros
Easy to teach others how to use the system.
Cons
We are slowly getting features we requested like memberships paid with installments. I’d like to see better dashboard design.

Essential “Brain” for Nonprofits
There is a learning curve, but once you get used to it Neon is like having several brains and arms.
Pros
We love how all the important functionalities for nonprofits - from email marketing to contact storage - are all available through one platform. It eliminates the need for subscriptions to many different platforms.
Cons
Sometimes Neon’s functions are limited; for example, forms are not easily customizable unless you know CSS or html code. But the help desk is very useful to get around hurdles like that.
Response from Neon One

Refused to turn over data without paying outrageous fee, then refused to cancel service
Pros
Before all the mergers/vc/private equity, they were decent to work with.
Cons
I asked for my donors' encrypted data. They refused to give it without paying them an outrageous fee. I said I refused to pay the fee, and they promptly invited me to cancel. I tried to cancel, but they wouldn't without having a phone call first. When I told them I didn't want a phone call, they told me I had to submit a form, and that my monthly fees would continue to accumulate for 90 days after I completed the form. They hold you hostage to their service, then refuse to let you cancel. I'll be reporting them to my state's consumer protection agency as well.

A Solid CRM With Built-in Processing
Neon CRM allowed some excellent integration with third parties (like SMS contact), but I did wish they did more in-house.They were constantly working to improve donor deduplication, but they'd not quite perfected it when I left BBBS-ETN.
Pros
The visual UI of their CRM allowed for an incredible amount of customization.Grouping households so that a household wouldn't register as having lapsed even with different members of the household were donating was a key feature many CRMs don't have.
Cons
Their smart donor identification (for when someone - either user or donor - would incorrectly enter information) wasn't as solid as others I've seen.

Appears to have good functionality but the proof is in the details.
We chose this software because it appeared to be able to do everything we needed it to. However, when getting into it more fully we consistently run into obstacles.
Pros
Good database function, automated emails, customized reporting.
Cons
We utilize the event module extensively and find that the functionality is difficult. The WYSIWYG feature to build an event page is difficult, you can't build sub pages for an event, no ability to have event add-on items (register for the event and buy a shirt, etc). I've had to add them into the store function and then make all events appear in the store function so that the add-on items would appear in the shopping cart with the registration - but there is no ability to customize a store item (i.e. personalization). The registration function is very confusing to our constituents in that you have to provide all information for the registrant before making the registration/ticket selection. Then the only place to put the add-on/store items is in the event registration summary page. The social fundraising functions are not terribly user friendly and intuitive. When you want to do registration discounts you can either take $ off or % off of the entire order - not off each registration when more than 1 person is registered. When I have asked about these features it has been suggested that we use Eventbright for events. We left event bright when we purchased NEON because we could save the costs with the integrated functions in NEON. Eventbright doesn't do social fundraising so this looked like a better option. And finally - duplicate accounts are a problem - especially because pricing is based upon the number of accounts. Merging/deleting accounts is a time consuming process. And, you cannot simply two accounts that should be merged (because you know they should be) unless the system identifies them based upon duplicate name, email, etc. For example - if a person registered using her home email and address for one event and then the next time she registered as that person's name using her work email the system won't recognize them as potential duplicates - and you can't manually select them to merge. The login feature we thought was good but unless you have memberships it isn't great - folks just don't log back in the next time the visit the site - they just create a new account.
Response from Neon One
Hi Shauna,
We’re sorry to hear about the difficulties you have experienced with functionality. We appreciate your feedback and take into account customer suggestions when considering product developments.
We will be reaching out directly to further discuss your duplicate management pains and to better understand your event registration items. There are deeper duplicate scans that can be useful, and we of course want to hear from you about how the event registration process might be simplified. In the last month, we've come out with an enhanced template feature for social fundraising for more customization and usability--we will also send you info on this.
Again, thank you for your valuable comments and please know we are always striving to improve the system and its functionality to better serve nonprofits. It's feedback like yours that helps us to plan for our monthly product releases. We appreciate having Star Legacy Foundation as part of the Neon community. We truly understand the importance of your mission and want to ensure NeonCRM can be effective in furthering stillbirth awareness.
Our Account Management team will be in touch, but please know you can contact them if you have future questions or concerns.

Neon is unmatchable
It is a core component of our business at this point, which we use daily. It stores so much information and organizes it in an extremely accessible manner. The various functionalities are used by our non-profit organization every single day. It seems like every aspect is useful and functional. As an organization, we have been able to eliminate other competing premium softwares and instead use Neon.
Pros
The user interface is extremely intuitive and easy to learn. It's truly an all in one software that can do so much. It's integration with various other apps is seamless. We have so much data, and Neon can handle it all, and make it easy to understand, access, and analyze. Neon is honestly an essential must-have for any organization.
Cons
I think the campaign email marketing part can be somewhat confusing. The components seem too separate, it needs to be more cohesive in one big step-by-step process instead of going back and forth between the tab's sub-categories. It works perfectly, I just think the process to sending emails can be a little more streamlined.
Response from Neon One
Thank you for your honest and comprehensive review of Neon CRM, Sarah! We know that email has been a pain point in the past, which is why we are uncovering some major updates on April 10, 2021. If your experience is anything like mine was, you are currently struggling with outdated software. You are having to maintain multiple databases manually in order to do all the things that are standard operating procedures in these fast-paced days, and you are working on a shoestring budget with a great but stretched staff.
For me, this is where Neon came in to help us. Is it perfect. No. Of course not. Unless you have a zillion dollars to house your own tech department you are unlikely to find absolute perfection. Is Neon, in my opinion, the closest thing to perfect for a non-profit organization? Yes!
Why do I think that?
1) Technology upgrades every 18 months (at the longest) which is almost impossible for a non-profit to keep up with while remaining competitive within today's business world. Neon is an ever-evolving system that shares functionality with all Neon clients; your membership database is always up-to-date with new innovations appearing and available to be customized to meet your needs for reasonable pricing (unlike other systems that, in my experience, started customization at around $25,000 a piece).
2) When hosting our own CRM on-site, we were responsible for maintaining our server; with an aging server and without a hardware specialist on staff, our data was always at risk, even though it was backed up. With Neon, our system is now a cloud-based system, leaving the hardware support to the experts at Neon. This was not only a worry off our backs but also a fiscal savings.
3) In order to keep up to date, we were maintaining multiple databases. We had our member database, our event database, our website member-only database, and our email database. This doesn't include the QuickBooks upkeep and our area membership lists that had to be maintained and exported separately on a monthly basis. Needless to say, this ate up a lot of time and was susceptible to human error. With Neon, everything was in one place (Please note we chose to use Neon's email because another service would mean we once again would have to import/export data and not have the tracking material on the records where we wanted them). This was a huge benefit. Having everything available in one place freed up our staff to work on other projects and spend time on long-term strategic planning as opposed to just working in the moment.
4) With our old system, we were the experts. We were all alone. If we wanted customer service, the vendor could sort of help but the service teams wouldn't take time to understand the way we were using the system and could only provide generic answers. With Neon, we have experts at the end of a chat or a phone call (depending on your needs and service package) who can log into your system, see what you are seeing, and team with you to find an answer to your issues.
5) With our old system, our volunteers and members had limited abilities and options available to them. With Neon, our volunteers and members have a greater level of interaction with their own records, as well as with each other.
So with all that said, my overall advice is get Neon. But when you do jump in also be realistic and patient with both Neon and your staff. Remember change is always hard. Expect that the transfer of data will be stressful. Expect that the first six months will include hiccups. Expect that in a year you will be an expert in NEON. Expect that your "sophomore" year experience will make it all worthwhile.
